Two Boer Battles

Nooitgedacht

We first visit a small cemetery of British graves and outline the positions of the British camps during the period of the South African war after Pretoria had fallen. After driving past Hartebeespoort Dam and the lovely Magaliesberg Mountains we drive to the top of the mountain where the Battle of Nooitgedacht took place between the Boers and British forces in the South African War. Sitting on top of the mountain with a view which stretches forever, the background to the battle is provided and the battle is then recounted in graphic detail.

Sites where the British were encamped shown as are the routes taken by the Boers to attack. The visit ends with a summation of the war and stories told to illustrate the effects of the war on the people and on subsequent events. We visit one of the grave on the farm, and drive past one of the biggest colony’s of Cape Vultures in South Africa, before visiting a little known Boer soldier graveyard, where we leave flowers.

Bronkhorstspruit

We drive to Bronkhorstspruit and visit the site of the battle that took place on 20th December, 1880, as well as the memorials there to the 94th Foot Regiment.
The story of the battle is told in vivid detail.
